Why not create your resume by screen recorder?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

This is a new inspiration to discover yourself with digital screen recording technology, making yourself closely keep in touch with people all over the world.

It is how wonder begins

A friend of mine has been searching for his next new job for 2 months but still drew a blank. Yesterday when he was making an online video chat with me to complain about the injustice distracted him; I noticed that he was not as poor as he looked in front of webcam. An idea jumped into my mind so I told him: “You look pretty smart and energetic through camera, why not trying introducing yourself through it?”

It seemed that my words stoke him to grow up some tips. He continued my topic with more interesting thoughts: “I found there were few clicks on my resume, so is there any idea to get it over?”

After 10 seconds in silence, our mind swung as one to a new concept: personal  screen recording resume.

Can screen recording resume really qualify?

Well, at first do not mention the possibility this new born phrase works. Since the population of online streaming media and development of screen recording technology, people have blurted out many novelties to share new ideas and represent themselves. In that way, why not attempting some new stuff when hunting a job?

I’m not joking, ruminating over this topic there does are many pros compared with traditional format of resume:

The interviewers sifting through resume often do a rapid scan over thousands of copies with same format. The new form containing screen recording video will add extra points to resume and gain more attention to interviewers. While finding proper resume, the interviewers will browse the information in some detail, but might still omit important some news. On the contrary, the  screen recording resume offers all of your information to them in a passive way which is more like to be obsessive reception imperceptibly. The newly-styled resume presents a face-to-face communication rather than a single piece of cold paper. You have plenty ways of representations in visual self introduction to earn enough points to conquer the interviewers, making yourself more actual and easy-going.

How can screen recorder realize that?

You might aroused much in interest, however, it’s still a little bit iffy and out of regular concept since people never take venture of attempting screen recording video as their resumes (so do my friend and me at first). In that way let’s do example to declare the fresh experience you can get.

In our ideation, this video should be made up by 3 parts: basic intro, individual representation and interactive communication, opening up to viewers a fresh-new and comprehensive cognition of demonstrator step by step, leaving a deep and perfect impression to your future leaders.

A screen recording with full voice is highly recommended since most of resumes contain texts and texts. On the other hand, audio resume can easily motivate readers’ motions and hold their attentions, altering the traditional turn of expression in which interviewers have to obtain info by reading applications themselves.

Basic introduction

In basic introduction, you can take advantage of all the space available to clearly present your contact information as well as education and notable achievements to keep interviewers oriented. With screen recorder software you can add some square boxes as a checkmark for the certain part of your resume, or set motion tracks of mouse as navigation between paragraphs. A recent photo of yourself will be highlight of this part, making your resume vivid and true to life.

Individual representation

As we all know, the main body of resume is branch point to evaluate the level of individuals, so the representation part will be the most important section which should be embellished and decorated in priority with full use of screen recorder software. For example, you can use zoom function to emphasize on one valuable working experience in professional experience section. To capture reviewers’ attention, you can add panning action to move the screen from one paragraph to another, guiding your reader to double check what kind of education or training you received and how they enhance your ability during your work.

Interactive communication

Have you ever thinking of turning your resume from a dull paper to viewtiful screencast? It’s the show time customizing your screen recording resume with more interactive elements and features. In screen recorders there’s many functions allow you to insert image, create animation and set various actions for every mouse click.

Supposing that a picture of championship of national mechanical design tournament jumps into the view, or an animated sparking banner displays the three-year training in Business Administration of Harvard. While the reviewers are enjoying your creative video recording resume, a big button appears to remind him to login your blog to grasp more news of yours. Who else can dare to be the ideal applicant except you? All achievements above are just with the help of outstanding screen recording software to gain.

The story of screen recording doesn’t end up

One week later, I receive a call from my friend, the man nearly got crazy about seeking a job. He tells me that he obtains offer from the company he’s been looking forward to it. We talk a lot about our fantastic but also funny idea of making resume simply by screen recorder on computer. No one will believe such kind of crazy thing unless he gives a bold attempt, and then finds out how great this originality is.

The author chooses one screen recording software called DemoCreator to record the sample below. Hope you enjoy it and any suggestion is welcome.

How to reduce SWF file size during the screen recording file editing

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

It’s quite popular to record your computer screen to make a tutorial, demo or gameplay video in order to share your masterpiece to the world. However, here is one big trouble that once you find out the output file occupies all your hard disk, resulting storage room shortage and system slowdown, furthermore, anyone can stand the long eternal upload progress of your 45-min yet 1GB video?

So now get some tips on what you can do to compress SWF file, please read it before you start to record your screen video.

Attention, all tips get to the root of this matter. No matter what screen recording software you use, all you should do is following the methods then gaining the engaging result.

Tip 1: Adjust the FPS (Frame per second) of your SWF output

This value describes the frequency at which an imaging device produces unique consecutive images.

Generally speaking, for regular screen captured tutorial and demo, setting up FPS to 12~20 frames is enough to produce all steps and movements on your screen. If you want video with more great fluency, just simply add some frames/Second. You can make attempts on figuring out a proper value to balance the video quality and SWF file size.

Tip 2: Optimize images you insert into SWF files

During the editing of screen recording videos, several of extra components might be added in as decoration and additional remarks. The most common one is image and that’s also a key element on altering SWF file size.

You can give preference to the image in JPG and GIF format. Since SWF size varies directly with the bitmap size, BMP and PNG are not recommended for they contain so many pixels lined up in rows, indicating the lesser image compression they can reach.

Tip 3: Use less key-frame animation

The key-frame creates the important frames of a sequence. The more key-frame you use in screen recording, the bigger the SWF file size will be.

To avoid the size increase of SWF files, you can decrease the redundant mouse clicks while recording, or delete those repetitive frame produced by mouse click and keyboard strike in the interface of screen recording software.

So there are two ways to simplify the key-frame. One is combination, it’s widely used in cases when two adjacent key-frames contain similar slide appearance, you can add all actions originally in the second frame after the first frame, then delete the following one frame. In this way, you save one key-frame.

Another way called replacement is rather gimmicky but still impressive and effective. Firstly, make a screen capture for one key-frame slide which differs from the prior one in display and save it as an image. Then import it to the prior frame, set up the right time it appears in the frame tool bar and add the certain effects you want. Check the preview; does it look the same as former state which has two key-frames? And how about the file size?

Tip 4: Choose the ideal audio file for your SWF files

Use MP3 compression, it’s the smallest sound form. In most instances, you can change both the bit rate and sampling frequency to control the audio quality of your screen recording output.

Here for regular narration, we suggest audio file in 22 KHz, 16 bit, single output signal. One more, avoid the stereo sound, it will make your file size double.

Tips 5: Limit the fonts and font styles use

Be careful when you’re about to embed smart font styles into text or button box in screen recording video. The fonts and font styles will make your SWF in corpulence especially when you are trying to embed some unique fonts which need extra room to store in SWF file.

If it’s not essential or on certain purpose, just type all text in one font. You can put the words in different size or various colors, it do little influence to the video size compared with the font mixing.

Tip 6: Pay heed to new screen recording utility

DemoCreator is a really neat screen recording software for web designers, teachers, e-learning workers and basically anyone who is using screen recorders and wants to share their high quality tutorials, demos and video presentations in compressed SWF files.

With the latest version of DemoCreator, it can reduce your SWF file automatically and optimize the whole part of video to export the best quality output demo as far as small in size, according to official announcement to be published in early November.

Screen Recording Software for Usability Testing

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

For usability testing on an application, a system or a Website, users are trying to finish the assigned task on computer. It is an important part to recording what users do on screen and publishing the process as videos for analysis. The content of videos can include screen activity such as mouse movement and click, page scroll and keystroke.

A video of these mouse movements, keystrokes, and other activities is most helpful for usability testing. Without good observational skills, it is difficult to remember what happened in the test. A video of screen recording not only helps you recall what happened on the screen, it provides more details to analyze and compare the processes between individuals.

There are various Windows screen recorder available. Most of them are free to try before buy and some of them with simple recording feature are even free. You can choose the one fits your need.

Screen recording software will slows down your computer performance more or less, but it is the best way to do the recording of the desktop compared to camcorder or VCR (Video Cassette Recorder). Besides, now hardware requirements are no longer the hurdle as they used to be.

The following requirements of screen recording software can satisfy most usability testing situations:

Optimize recording settings. Recording at lower frame rate and lower resolution(like 800×600) in lower color depth(16-bit color)has no obvious impact on system performance. If you can disable your hardware acceleration, you can get better result.

Unobtrusive recording. Most of the tools will not completely disappear while recording, but they all reduce to a small icon in the toolbar. And now a few screen recorders enable users to hide the system tray icon. So users will not be distracted or feel anxiety by being reminded of recording.

Instant playback. In this technique usability test, users are doing the assigned task and their screen activities are in recording. When the task is completely they are shown the video and asked to conduct a think aloud. It’s best to watch the video right after the test to minimize forgetting.

Pause, Fast Forward, and Rewind. Some common video formats are nice because they can be played with video player. Some of the tools use a special video format with special player should have a pause feature and preferably fast-forward and rewind.

Here were a few other features for usability testing but they are not critical.

Record Sound. If the usability testing is concern with audio, it will be better to get a screen recording application with sound recording feature to do the recording. And now more and more applications supports sound recording from multiple sources such as Microphone, Rear Input, and Stereo Mix. And it can be used to record the interview dialogue after session with participants.

Editing feature. This enables users to edit callouts to illustrate some special procedures in the recorded video after the test. Some notes can be added according to the after test interview.

Hotkeys. To minimize futzing in testing sessions, hotkeys for important commands like Record, Pause, Play, and Stop is a useful feature.

Screen recording softwareDemoCreator is mainly designed for creating software tutorials and system demos. However, it can be a useful tool for usability testing. And now more and more requirements of usability test are considered in the design of screen recording software.

Note:

People may think there is one limitation to the software approach – it only records what happens on the screen but users themselves. If you want to learn something from the body language and physical movements of the user then you’ll still need a camcorder. Now the good news is some screen recorders also support the webcam recording and picture-in-picture video. They can record the video of your webcam while recording screen activity.
