Digital Mixer ? the Revolutionized Mixing Console

Friday, May 14th, 2010

A mixer, or mixing consoles, audio mixers, mixing desk, or sound board, is an electronic device that combines or “mixes”, routes, changes level or dynamics of audio signals. There are 2 types of mixer – analog and digital. Though analog mixers remain popular because of its simplicity, digital mixers have remarkably making its way over the past couple of years. Below are just some of the key advantages of digital mixers:

Special Features

Most models include special effects like parametric EQ, gating, automatic feedback reaction, compression, reverb, tap delay and straight delay. Other digital mixers have spectrograph, real time analyzer, and can be integrated with loudspeaker management devices like crossover filtering and limiting.

Remote Access

System technicians can make adjustments from a distant using wired/wireless laptops, tablets or touch screens. Modifications can be easily monitored and controlled thus a more responsive mixing platform to address changing conditions on stage.

Sound Quality

A digital mixer utilizes a mic preamp which is followed by an ADC that quantizes the audio stream. Consequently, overloading and clipping are appropriately managed to produce a more accurate digital streaming. Many digital mixers are also quieter than their analog counterparts. They are more resistant to external interference from radio transmitter for instance walkie-talkies and mobile phones.

Usefulness

It allows groupings of inputs by internally reassigning functions thus providing convenience. Also, space requirements can be saved by sharing channel adjustments. In addition, saved data can be accessed via external storage device such as USB flash drives.

Virtual Mixing

Using special computer software and coupled inputs, recording hardware and output, digital virtual mixers can save cost, physical space and media archival.

Digital Mixing Software For PC – Some Tips

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Once you have selected which digital DJ software package to use, you have to select the computer on which you want to run it. You do not necessarily need a CPU with the fastest processor. Such software will run fine on a 1.2 ghz processor.

Now you have to decide the size of hard disk you want. You do need a lot of space to store the various tracks. In most cases, you will be having thousands of them to store. So go for anywhere above 120 GB of hard disk space. You will run out of space in your hard disk if it is of a low capacity. So you should try to have one as large as possible.

You need good sound. So you should not compromise on the sound card. Install the best quality sound card on your laptop or PC. There are external sound cards available that you can use without any problem. As you are mainly dealing with audio, a sound card is essential and you should look for the best one available in the market.

So if you are planning to build a PCDJ, you should use a computer or laptop exclusively for this purpose. Do not use the same computer for personal use and for running the digital DJ software.

If you do not buy a new PC for this purpose, you should reinstall the operating system and make sure you do not run anything else on it other than the Digital DJ software. It requires a dedicated computer to run and you should not let any other program interfere with its functioning. That is why you need to install it on a separate PC.

You need to rip the music from a CDROM to convert it to MP3 format to store in your hard disk. For this you should keep the ripping quality to be 1 92kbps or higher. Higher is usually better here.

A super computer is not required to run PCDJ software but you should check the minimum hardware requirements on the developer website. You can also use the free trials offered by various developers.

Finally you do not need to have a very high RAM but try to have atleast 512 MB. Hard disk capacity should be high as you have to store a lot of tracks. Also check whether the local laws allow you to rip the music from original cd or not.

Having a proper system and a well installed PCDJ software on your system is necessary if you want to be successful in your digital mixing efforts. You may do everything well but still not get the desired results if you have not set up the system rightly.

So it is advised to double check whether you have done everything rightly and have only the Digital DJ software installed on your PC to dedicate all your resources to just it. Once you have done it, you can proceed to create your own works and remove all hurdles to your success.

Sound Mixing Software – Save 2 Hours of Research

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

It’s never easy to choose the right Sound Mixing Software and If you have listened to songs over the past decade or so, you will find that mixing has changed from the very simple to very complicated art form.

In the past there was just the vocalist with a couple of guitarists. But nowadays things are much more complicated, and because of the fierce competition in the music industry, musicians and artist who aspire to make hits cannot afford to ignore mixing as a necessary step in producing their records. All professional artists spend valuable time, as well as money in mixing, just to make sure that what comes out is unique and is at par with the other artists.

Top Three in Sound Mixing Software

Pro Tools- The daddy of mixing, this is what the pros use

Logic- The perfect package for the creative musician as the learning curve is not so high and let your music flow

Garage Band – Comes free with the mac and has 60% of the feature that the full version of logic offers

Mixing is a special form of art and science, and can make a big difference between a hit and a flop.

Because of the advancement in technology and because a lot of hardware and software necessary in mixing was made more and more affordable, just about everyone can record and produce complex music. A professional recording studio is not necessarily required to come up with a polished sound. All these advancements have made the recording industry a very exciting one indeed.

There are many factors that can be incorporated in the mixing process that makes each song very unique:

1. The instruments used 2. How much bandwidth is taken by each instrument 3. Levels of frequency

Among many others can all be tweaked and adjusted to produce a unique cut!

Some musicians can also do their own mixing but it takes time to learn the many tricks of the trade, and it is also a trial and error process so be ready to devote a lot of time if you are interested into being a multi-skilled artist who can play music and mix too.

You should also be able to critique your own work. Remember that you are looking for flaws in something you have painstakingly produced and you need to detach the musician in you from the technician to be able to do a proper mix.

Sound Mixing Software – Where to test your mix

On your Ipod In the Car PC soundcard and speakers As a ringtone On a small stereo

Always remember that your record and mix has to sound great on different listening devices and different listening environments. It has to sound good on a controlled, enclosed environment like the car stereo, while it should also sound good on an open environment, say a department store or a mall. Mixing will get you the right sound for these many listening schemes. You may not find the right mix the first time but remember that this is an iterative process so just keep on improving your mix until you reach the right sound that is a pleasure to listen to anywhere.
