Magix Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus has a solid upgrade to version 14, with a slew of new features and extras. You still get a ton of slick effects, transitions, audio tracks and photo video editing options, but version 15 also includes the following upgrades:

* Multi-cam editing: Record and edit two video channels live and at the same time
* Smoother and simpler AVCHD video importing and editing
* Larger library of customizable 2D and 3D title effects
* New DVD and Blu-ray menu templates
* New proDAD Adorage video effects
* Improved color correction interface makes it easier to adjust color values in a snap
* Improved batch processing lets you select entire video folders to convert, instead of one at a time

Magix Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus also has editing and publishing tools for amateurs and a good collection of editing tools for those familiar with more complex editing tasks, such as bluescreen edits, timeline and storyboard layout, multi-track editing and more.

Stand Out Features:

* Easily publishes to YouTube
* Compatible with portable devices like Sony PSPs, iPods and cell phones
* Includes iClone for 3D animation
* Supports up to 99 tracks
* Screen capturing feature for streaming video

Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus by Magix can import nearly all common video, audio and image file types. You can either drag and drop videos into the timeline, or use one of the many importing tools found throughout the program. In terms of video it can import AVI, DV-AVI, MPEG (1,2,4), MXV, MJPEG, Quicktime and HD WMV. It can also capture analog type files such as video from old VHS tapes or TV. If you would like to add an audio file or clip to your video you can import WAV, MP3, OGG, WMA, MIDI, Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital 5.1 file types. It can also support JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF, TGA and more image file types and most scanner and digital camera formats.

Overall, Magix Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus is on the right track. They pushed ahead of Sony’s Vegas Movie Studio with this new version, thanks to the improved interface and ever present depth of features. Even so, using this video editing software isn’t as easy on new users, but Movie Edit Pro 15 in fact is one of the most compatible with portable devices and high definition video editing and publishing software.

Choosing the best video editing software can seem a daunting task given the wide range of products available at the moment. However with a little help to remain focused on what is important you should be able to make a good choice.

One of the key points to keep in mind is, “What is it that I am I REALLY going to do with the video editing software that I choose?” The answer to that question has to remain uppermost in your mind when selecting the best video editing software for you.

All of the major home video editing software companies offer camcorder to DVD video editing solutions that make them almost inseparable from each other. So concentrate on what you REALLY need.

The first thing to establish is what is the format of the material you will be working with and what will be the formats that you will want to produce in the end. Input will be determined by your camcorder or your DVD recorder or whatever the source of your material is. Take note of the format your device records in and make sure that one is covered first.

Then realistically take a look at how you would most likely distribute your final videos. DVD? Blu-Ray? Uploading to YouTube or similar? Make sure the software you choose can output to the format you want.

So, your first task in deciding on what video editing software is suitable for you is to work out what your most common source video files will be and what your most common video output will be. That represents the core of what you will be using the software for and should be your main focus.

Like any other competitive market, video editing software is caught up in a never ending race to keep up with technology as it develops and still make the product seem “sexy” to the customer. The point is you probably don’t WANT to buy video editing software. What you WANT is a finished video production.

The problem for the software company is that they know you NEED to buy video editing software but that is not what you WANT! They have to make you WANT it! And because of that we get “bells and whistles” features that make you WANT IT but most likely will never need.

Video Transitions:
Transitions are the little inserts that go in between two clips to make the scene change. If you look at a movie you will notice when the scene changes it either cuts to the next scene with no transition, this is called cut or a straight cut. It fades to black then fades into the next scene from black called a cross fade through black. Or, finally, the two scenes merge into each other softly and this one is called a cross fade. There you have it, pretty well the entire gamut of transitions that professional video editors use!

All video editing software programs offer at least 50 transitions each. Newbies use ALL the available transitions because they look cool the first time they see them. The reality is NOBODY ever, ever wants to go back to their house again to look at their latest production because their heads are still spinning from the last one! Ignore transitions as a deciding factor, all video editing software programs have them and they all have more than you need.

Video Overlay:
An overlay track, simply put, is the ability to put one video in the background and have another visible on top of it. It is that “picture in picture” effect you have seen on TV and in movies. You can also put subtitles in an overlay track or still photos or a bunch of other things to really get creative. You need about five for good control but you would never use more than that otherwise, once again, no-one is going to want to watch the mess you have created!

Audio:
There is no video editing software at the consumer level that offers truly excellent audio control and features. They are video editing programs not audio editing programs. Some have pretty good control, some don’t, if you are going to demand pro level audio then you need dedicated software for that.

The ability to handle Dolby 2 channel is a bare minimum and 5:1 Surround should be standard. The program should offer two audio tracks to play with in addition to the sound in the video track. That leaves you plenty of room for music, narration or effects.

Smart Render:
Rendering is the term used when the video editing software is making the final file of your newly created video. Up until rendering, in any consumer level video editing software, all the cuts, additions, changes and adjustments you have been making are “virtual.” The original footage is never touched. So rendering puts all that together and produces your final video file in the format you have chosen as the viewing format.

Any of the highly compressed formats such as MPEG2 (for DVDs), MPEG4 etc invariably suffer from loss of quality when they are re-rendered. The degree of loss of quality varies but it is essential that any video editing software you choose has the ability to recognise those files it does not need to re-render and simply copy those sections resulting in the high quality possible being retained. It should also offer good control over the properties of the final video.

So there you have it, stay focused on what is important and keep the “gee whiz” stuff to a minimum and you will do fine!

After youâ??ve shot your â??raw footageâ??, itâ??s time to bring everything together into a coherent, entertaining, and motivating program. Since weâ??re living in the digital age, itâ??s very likely that youâ??ll be editing your program on your computer. There are different levels of editing software and since this is about producing a professional corporate video, I focus on the professional program that we use at Video One Productions, called Final Cut Pro (FCP). Itâ??s only available on the Mac.

Iâ??ve used Media 100, Premier, Pinnacle, and FCP editing software, and they all operate along similar lines, be we prefer FCP because it gives us more bang for the buck and it has a relatively intuitive interface.

Though we use FCP, we use other software that specialize in particular tasks that are necessary for professional editing and post production. We use Photoshop and Illustrator to create graphics and manipulate still images that we want to import into FCP; Soundtrack Pro and Sound Loops to produce music and sound effects; Live Type for text effects; After Effects and Motion to apply special effects to the edited footage; and Studio Pro to author the DVDâ??s that contain the programs we edit.

The first task is to get the footage you shot into the computer by digitizing the footage into a useable file format. Typically, the material is transferred to your computer via a firewire cable which goes from your camcorder or â??sourceâ?? deck to the computer. Try not to use your camcorder as your source deck, to feed the footage into the computer, as camcorders have small motors and are not designed to be used as tape players. Buying a player will add to your expense out front, but will save you money if you donâ??t have to replace your camera because you burned it out using it for something it wasnâ??t intended to be used for.

When you digitize the footage with FCP, it gets converted into a QuickTime file. This file can then be dragged into the timeline so that you can edit your piece. The timeline is where your video gets displayed and edited. It is the pallet of your video work of art so to speak.

There are a variety of tools you can use to move, cut, slow down, speed up or do other things to the footage. You also have text effects tools, video transitions and a host of special effects to enhance your video. Iâ??m not going to give you a tutorial on FCP, but I will discuss some of the doâ??s and donâ??t of effective editing.

Once you have acquired your footage, you can either digitize the footage yourself or have a company digitize it for you. If you go the latter route, the company should digitize it to an internal hard drive of theirs and then transfer it to your external hard drive. Then you can transfer the footage from your external hard drive to your internal drive. You never want to capture or edit to an external hard drive, as the throughput is not sufficient to move the video. If the throughput isnâ??t fast enough, youâ??ll get stuttering video or the program or computer may crash.

There are now external hard drives that you can capture and edit to. But unless you have an external hard drive with a firewire 800 interface, play it safe and edit from your internal drive. Not to get too technical, but your external drive needs a serial ATA connection and an IDE or Ultra ATA hard drive that goes at least 7200 RPM to edit video. If you have that combination, you can capture and edit video on that drive with no problems. Of course your computer must have the firewire 800 interface and be fast enough to handle video as well.

Donâ??t forget to max out on RAM. You never have enough RAM in your computer. And youâ??ll need it to edit video.

If youâ??re editing video to an internal drive on your computer, it is recommended that you use one internal drive for your applications, system, etc. and another internal drive for your video projects. Weâ??ve had the best luck editing video on Hitachi internal drives.

No matter what drive you use, for optimal performance, and to prevent crashes, make sure you have at least 10% free space on the drive at all times. Internal hard drives are cheap these days, so get the largest one you can. Youâ??ll be amazed at how fast you use up the space.

Letâ??s talk about the video program itself. People who are new to video editing often go overboard. Donâ??t go crazy with the special effects, use of wild transitions, or feel that the text you use has to fly in every time. If anything, error on the side of conservatism. If you donâ??t, you run the risk of fatiguing your audience with overkill. And thatâ??s the last thing you want to do. In fact, using cuts in between shots is sometimes more effective than any transition, especially a wild and crazy one.

This is not to say that your video doesnâ??t need to move along. In fact, a rule of thumb is that you should probably have a new shot every 5 seconds. Of course, it depends on the nature of the shot. If someone is giving a 20 second testimonial, perhaps you can dissolve up the them, and then perhaps after 5 seconds, bring up some text in the lower portion of the screen, identifying the speaker by name, title and company. This achieves the effect of informing the audience as to who the speaker is and it changes up the shot to create visual interest.

Speaking of text, make sure itâ??s title safe, which is another phrase for making sure it fits within the boundaries of the television screen. Your editing program should have a guide somewhere in a menu that will show you how far the screen extends. When youâ??re creating text, the boundary can be superimposed over the screen. This tool shows you exactly where itâ??s â??safeâ?? to place text. If the text goes beyond the safe area, it will be chopped off and wonâ??t appear on the television screen.

The final thing Iâ??ll mention is sound. You must make sure that the sound level is consistent throughout the video. The viewer will definitely turn it off if the audio is uneven. It must be consistently loud enough to hear, but low enough to be constant and not startling to the viewer. So no matter how long the program is, go through the entire program and tweak the audio, making it louder or softer where needed. Your program should have tools to do this.

There is much more to the editing process, but I hope you have benefited from this overview.
