Is there any good FREE recording studio grade software out there?

I’ve been trying to find more professional software for my recording needs than window’s measly sound recorder. Any suggestions? I want something similar to a free version of NCH’s Recordpad and MixPad combined (those sneaky idiots don’t even tell you it’s a 30 day trial!), but I also want something a bit more comprehensive than that. I can’t find one single doggone thing with any search engine, and it’s hard to anyway, since search engines require a general knowledge of what you’re looking for. God save us all when the day comes, in fact, when a search engine actually does what you want it to! Anyhoo, I need something that I can do some cool stuff to my sound bytes and stuff. What I’m really looking for is a full fledged suite (and movie grade is way above my budget here)!

If you have a Mac with iLife, you have GarageBand, which is a basic sequencer software that comes bundled with it.

Other than that, Mackie makes sequencer software called Tracktion that is pretty good, but it’s $99. However, if you’re using your regular soundcard, you really need an audio interface.

Your soundcard with the 1/8″ plugs (those little ones) is of very low quality (soundblaster and such). They advertise well, but the fact is, you need something that is going to process the audio cleanly and more quickly. Not to mention, you could probably use more channels.

If you buy Mackie’s Tapco USB audio interface ($150), you’ll get everything you need to start making better music (especially if you’re using a soundblaster or equivalent soundcard and Windows Sound Recorder. :P I used to use it too. :) It sucked). Mackie’s Tapco comes with Tracktion. You install the software, there’s probably a usb driver for the Tapco that you need to install, then plug in your mics or guitars, or both and you’re set (until you start wanting to upgrade. Believe me, the urge to upgrade never goes away).

There are other audio interfaces bundled with sequencer software, but this is one of the cheaper ones, and Mackie is very reliable.

    p.s. don’t use a Behringer audio interface!!!

Good luck. Here’s a link to one of my favorite online stores below. Most of their stuff has free shipping. Hope this helps.
